Symposium Recommendation for 2009

  1. Professional engineers to comply with best practices of engineering management. Hence connection the knowledge based project management and quality management is to be encouraged.
  2. All sources of renewable energy to be encouraged. All universities introducing alternative energy and energy management disciplines should approach IEEEP for collaboration for conducting feasibility studies and local research & development. They can together setup experimental stations for acquiring finances for implementation of the studies.
  3. Tariff scheme to cater incentives for energy efficient utilization via energy efficient equipment.
  4. The disaster management infrastructure should reach down to the tehsil level from the Federal level by the government and NDMA Pakistan.
  5. Regulations for measurement, monitoring and penalization to be framed in respect of power quality (PQ) at various buildings & premises to save energy besides harmonic distortion in the power system that are affecting performance and life of equipment connected to power system.
  6. Voltage, frequency and harmonic distortion should be kept in safe limits by the utility companies in the transmission and distribution networks.
  7. The users of electrical power should ensure a power factor as close to 1 as possible to avoid wastage of energy.
  8. Solar energy for industrial water heating is to be utilized on massive scale specially for the textile sector.
  9. The industry should encourage the academia to concentrate on projects relating to energy conservation.
  10. Utilization of FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission System) for improving transmission system performance such as;
    1. Increasing power flow capacity of transmission line
    2. Voltage stability
    3. Overall system security
  11. Adoption of intelligent high frequency PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) of a series transformer to be encouraged to obtain precise output voltage with lightning-fast response time to achieve substantial savings in the sized, weight & energy losses of the unit.
  12. Efforts should be made to start stepwise indigenous production of large wind turbines and PV solar system. Government to facilitate local production by formulating entrepreneurship friendly policies.
  13. 50 MW biogas project using cow dung should be established in Karachi on urgent basis to support the WPPs to be established in the Gharo corridor.
